Context

Poor mental health accounts for more than half of all work-related illnesses – that’s 12bn lost each year to depression and anxiety. With 1 in 6 of us experiencing mental health problems at work, and almost 1 in 10 professionals experiencing thoughts of suicide or self-harm, businesses need to take action to protect their employees’ wellbeing.

To help tackle these issues, the World Health Organization is now recommending employee training – and that’s where wellbeing champions come in. These are groups of individuals who are upskilled to raise awareness, tackle stigma and support mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Problem

Becoming a wellbeing champion is one of the most rewarding things people can do in their careers. And it really does make a difference – with research showing champions network can boost employee wellbeing, prevent burnout and increase job satisfaction.

But champions training needed a reboot. The status quo is either 50+ page PDFs (that busy, time-poor professionals don't have time to read), or uninspiring mental health first aid training delivered face-to-face in a conference room (that no one wants to do).

Solution
We decided to scale champions by delivering a concise digital course.  We wanted to create flagship training for the entire category that engaged and excited users, inspiring more people to sign up and drive meaningful change in their workplaces.

To do this, we created a conceptual and visual world that evoked a sense of social belonging and community. We enlisted top organisational and clinical psychologists, who drew on the latest research and guidelines to provide best-in-class, science-backed training. And we gave it away to everyone, for free, for a whole year.

The final course had 5 modules with scientifically backed learning outcomes. Each module contains 4-6 nano-sized lessons, each of which was animated and/or shot content, lived experiences, reflections and material which you can download.

My Role
It takes a village to tow a project of this magnitude over the finish line – the creative process is a democratic process where everyone chips in and gives feedback where necessary.

I helped lead the team through the creative process – we designed a radically differentiated creative positioning that removed any chance of direct competition within the mental health and wellbeing space.

I created a visual identity that amplifies and complements the creative positioning of the course – as part of this development I designed all the style frames, crafted the illustrations and artworked the accompanying visuals.

Impact

After taking the training
People were 74% more confident in their role as champions.
They had an 84% increase in knowledge around mental health.

2,000 champions trained that look after 100,000+ people
in global organisations such as Uber, Sony, Diageo, NHS, MLB, Samsung, Mediacom, Standard Chartered.
